HISTORICAL BACKGROUND:

The Saint John of God Health Services in Cameroon sprung from the Hosptialler Order Of Saint John Of God(1572) is a faith-based catholic religious institution that was born of the Gospel of mercy(Mt. 8:17; 25:34-46). It offers medical care to the less privileged of our society in the manner and style of her Holy Founder Saint John of God.

The Health services in Cameroon came into existence since 1968 when the Health brothers from Andalucía province in Southern Spain came to Cameroon invited by Late Pa Nzo Ekangaki from Nguti Subdivision. On arrival, they contacted late Bishop Julius Peteers – Bishop of Buea diocese to facilitate the erection of a canonical house in Nguti town in the South West Region of Cameroon. The Brothers took over a general hospital that was previously managed by Ad-Lucem foundation. On 8^th March 1970, the brothers officially opened the hospital under the name St. John of God Catholic Hospital. They were later assisted by the Sisters Servants of Mary from Spain.

As time went by the Archbishop of Bamenda under his Lordship Archbishop Paul Verdzekov invited the Brothers to Bamenda. The brothers arrived in Batibo in 1983 and in 1984 a health centre was established. It provides general health care services to all.

In 2011, the Brothers from Batibo, Nguti and Douala realised the long dream of extending their presence in Cameroon to Douala under the invitation of Christian Cardinal Tumi. This was initially because many patients were coming from Douala to Nguti for orthopaedic surgeries. The brothers secured a terrain at Yassa village in Douala and while the works to construct the brothers’ house were going on, a clinic was started in Boko in 2011. On the 7^th October, 2015, a clinic is made functional in Yassa that provide general and orthopaedic consultation to the needy and sick people.
